InternetAcceleration News Summary The BIG news from Seattle last week was the double whammy of F5 Networks' announcement that it is ditching EDGE-FX, their Inktomi "powered" integrated cache that they announced with much fanfare in April 2001, along with the reduction of about 40 people as it changes strategy. F5 cited the "increasing commoditization of cache appliances." I'm not sure I know what "increasing commoditization" is but considering that they had the Inktomi product in their offering for just about a year, you would think they'd have figured that out sooner. F5 said that EDGE-FX generated less than $800K in quarterly sales, meaning that Inktomi's software strategic alliance license royalty revenues are probably pretty small, putting another nail in that coffin (the strategy that is). Let's see what this week's news from San Mateo brings! In our "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING" department, Pluris' backers decided to call it a day and shut the doors. In February, Pluris announced that it had raised another $53M, adding to a total of $167 raised by November, 2000. We're thinking that with the present scandals, bankruptcies and re-organizations going on in the telecom business right now that there probably wasn't too much appetite for service providers purchasing million dollar core routers in the near future. While it is sad news for their 165 employees, things like this are a necessary step in the process of bottoming out and getting on with the recovery, or so we're told. And speaking of getting whole, Yipes Enterprise Services (formerly PHX communications) acquired the network operations and other assets of Yipes Communications (which filed for bankruptcy earlier in the year). The company also raised $40.8 million round of funding. Yipes had been able to keep their metro fiber service up and running through the reorganization. There was even more financing news last week -- Integra Telecom, a local, long distance and Internet services provider, secured $22 million from Bank of America Capital Investors, Bank of New York, Boston Ventures, CIT Group, GE Capital and Nautic Partners. Ample Communications, frames processing silicon solutions provider, received $21 million in second round funding. And Synamics secured an additional $2 million in follow-on financing bringing their total to $10 million. Synamics provides business communications solutions. Xalted Networks, developer of broadband access systems, filed for Chapter 11 as well as closed third round of funding of an undisclosed amount from Charter and Alliance -- sounds like some lease holders are getting the shove. On the product front, application security provider Ingrian Networks introduced new security capabilities for corporate users accessing Web-based Outlook e-mail. Mirapoint announced its multimedia messaging platform built on the Mirapoint Message Server and KnowNow, an XML messaging software provider, debuted their KnowNow Application Connector for Excel integration Southern California-based software/service provider Cognitive, launched VelociNET pay-per-use load balancing services for small and medium-sized Web hosting firms. Kagoor Networks, a voice over IP (VoIP) traffic management products provider, announced a VoIP demarcation solution bridging enterprise to carrier networks. Silverback Systems introduced iSNAP, a family of storage network access processors. Resonate Central Dispatch, a LAN-based software traffic management product from Resonate, received IBM ServerProven status ensuring the product runs reliably on IBM servers. In last week's issue of Network Computing, contributing editor Peter Morrissey wrote an interesting review of Sockeye's GlobalRoute 2.0 for managed routing services. From the sound of it, he actually took the time to figure out how GlobalRoute actually works -- pretty refreshing approach. In partnership news, EMC has formed a new storage consulting group, Information Solutions Consulting, developed through a 5-year agreement with Accenture. CBS and RealNetworks have partnered to provide 24/7 live video streaming from 'Big Brother 3.' Akamai and Technidata, a Mexican-based reseller, have partnered to power Mexico's premiere technical university's distance learning initiative. And, Curl announced partnering with eighteen system integrators including Dataskill, Imisys, Meiga Innovation Oy and others. Meanwhile in the personnel area, ORMvision, provider of hosted applications for the telecom industry, named Robert Fillmore as CEO. Harland LaVigne was named president and CEO of Lancope, an intrusion detection systems appliance company. EMC announced the appointment of Mark Lewis as executive vice president of new ventures and chief technology officer and David Goulden as vice president of global marketing and business development. Alan Usas was selected as vice president of engineering at OneSecure. Mirror Image named Richard Buck as vice president of engineering and Spinnaker Networks appointed Kevin Nigh vice president of operations. And, New Edge Networks, a broadband services provider, promoted three members of its management team. Mark Day was named vice president of wholesale sales, Tom Mangan was appointed to vice president of WAN sales and Jeff Waddell was promoted to vice president of direct and alternate channel sales.
