News Summary OK -- we took a few days for the fourth and now we've got to recap what's gone on during the past couple of weeks. And there's been a lot -- considering that it's mid-July, typically a slow period. They must have been giving money away on Sand Hill Road at their 4th of July parties -- over $225M was invested in 14 startups. But the biggest news, by far, happened in the storage business. 2003 is going to go down in history as the year of the high tech mergers. After several years of recession with many companies having jettisoned new product development to avoid red ink, corporate boards are dispensing with organic growth in favor of a merger-based strategy. A couple of days ago, EMC Corporation announced a definitive agreement to acquire LEGATO valued at approximately $1.3 billion. LEGATO's strengths are in heterogeneous information protection and recovery, HSM (hierarchical storage management), automated availability, and email and content management. So where did the $225M go? In the last few weeks, 14 companies took home the prize with the biggest being mobile access solution provider Visto Corporation extending its recent round of financing with an additional $20.1M. This brings the total raised in the last 90 days to $50.4M. Investors included VantagePoint Venture Partners, Oak Investment Partners and the Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University. Vivato, a Wi-Fi infrastructure company, raised $44.5M in Series C funding led by Advanced Technology Ventures with Leapfrog Ventures, U.S. Venture Partners, Walden International and Intel Communications Fund. Sanera Systems, enterprise storage networking solutions, secured $35M in third round financing. Optical transport equipment provider, Turin Networks raised $17M in its mezzanine round. BigBand Networks, maker of multimedia routers for cable TV operators, raised $15M in its D round. Performaworks, performance management software, secured $13M in Series B funding led by Pequot Ventures and Deson Ventures. KaVaDo, Web application protection, secured $10M in third round funding. Ethernet-based networking products developer, Ammasso, closed $10M in Series A financing. Orthogon Systems, deep non-line-of-sight wireless technology for broadband networks provider, secured $7M led by Atlas Venture and the Carlyle Group. European short message services provider, mBlox, has merged with American short message services provider, MobileSys and raised $8M as part of the transaction. Infravio, Web services integration and management software provider, secured $6.2M in second round venture financing. Cloakware, application security solutions, closed $4.2M in second round funding. Omniva Policy Systems completed its $4M Series B round of financing. Application and information security software provider, XActional secured $2.5M in its first round. In corporate news, Loudeye, provider of services for distributing and managing digital media, has appealed to NASDAQ in regards to delisting from the NASDAQ Small Cap Market. CenterSpan Communications announced that it has been delisted from the NASDAQ National Market and will deregister its stock. Pelago Networks, provider of a converged service node for delivering enhanced voice and IP-enabled services, has ceased operations and is selling its assets. WARP Technology Holdings, network and application acceleration technology solutions, reported fourth quarter 2003 sales totaling more than $1M. EMC also announced that it had formed a strategic global sales, marketing and technology partnership with BMC Software, enterprise management solutions. Sun Microsystems entered into an agreement to acquire Pixo Inc., provider of Java technology-based server software for managing the secure distribution and monetization of digital content for mobile device users. Sun has also entered into a wide-ranging technical collaboration with Network Appliance to deliver 10Gb/s transports.
