News Summary Endpoint Security and Network Admission Control -- We've had a lot of interest in our newest report topic -- Network Admission Control. A while back, Cisco launched down the path of Endpoint security as a good vehicle for describing part of its long term directions and, in doing so, raised everyone's awareness that endpoint security is probably a good idea. Since then, large companies like Microsoft and Juniper have chimed in as have startups like Sygate. Endpoint security is turning out to be one of the more interesting topics of 2005 so we've decided to make it the topic of our next report. By all means, we'd love to hear from you on the subject -- jkatsaros@irg-intl.com. Saving the Internet: We had a chance to catch up with the current management team at Caspian Networks recently. If you remember Caspian was Larry (actually the father of the Internet) Roberts attempt to make the mother of all scalable backbone routers. Not surprisingly after the bubble burst they failed at that goal. More surprisingly perhaps, recently they got another $55M of funding (bringing the grand total -- and we mean GRAND -- to $316M). Along the way Caspian has found an intriguing new value proposition which one might say is saving the Internet from Communism. The Internet protocols were invented by some well meaning, bright graduate student, and it's fair to say that they quite accurately implemented the Marxian philosophy "to everyone according to their need; from everyone according to their ability." When you're in your 20's this seems like ultimate wisdom but when you're over 40 you realize it isn't the basis for an economically viable society. The anarchistic technical basis of the Internet was great for its birth and growth but perhaps not surprisingly hasn't turned out to be the basis for easily making money if you're a network service provider. Running an IP network means you have little control over the traffic you bear (that's what the routers determine by themselves) and all traffic is carried with Marxian "best-effort." Making money running an airline is hard enough but nothing compared to running a network under these ultimately commoditized conditions. Caspian has realized that their mother-of-all-router design is also very good for identifying each and every flow going through your network, and treating each "appropriately." Caspian has chosen the politically correct term "Fair Use" to talk about this idea, but "whatever the market will bear" probably captures the value proposition better. All of a sudden Vonage's VoIP traffic through some Asian PTT network takes on the aspect of NYC garbage collection: with the right kickback to the PTT (who has Caspian flow control equipment) everything works out ducky. Without the right "partnership" (read revenue sharing) it sort of doesn't work very well. If you're 20 this must all sound like what happens when evil commercial interest intrudes into a good network design. If you're over 40 it sort of sounds like someone finally discovering the key to free market networking. Only time (or "the revolution") will tell.
Saving The Internet or Controlling The Internet? -- With products like Caspian's, service providers may soon have the ability to decide which services you'll get to use. If, for instance, your service provider decided, for whatever reasons -- monitory or political -- to prevent you from connecting to the Vonage service, how would you feel? Or what if they charged you a surcharge for doing so? We're all pretty used to the fact that our cable providers get to decide which channels you get to see, often with disastrous results as evidenced by the big Yankee's blackout that occurred when Cablevision and the Yankees couldn't come to terms. Today you don't have these sorts of issues with your service providers because they don't have the equipment they need to actually block complex services. But that's all about to change. Since our readers have more than just a passing interest in this subject, we'd love to hear your opinion -- feedback. Open Source Revival -- Back in the early days of the Internet boom a new marketing strategy arose which was loosely based on the notion of giving away basic software (like a browser) and then marketing a commercial enhanced version. After the bubble burst the popularity of doing this fell into disfavor as investors were concerned about the impact to the bottom line of giving away something valuable. Nevertheless, two networking software companies that have been plugging away at this basic open source marketing strategy are reporting tremendous success and record-breaking sales. Tripwire just introduced its latest product -- Tripwire Enterprise 5.1 -- targeting change management and building off Tripwire's co-founder Gene Kim's Open Source software. And SourceFire continues to build on the popular Snort Open Source intrusion detection technology developed by SourceFire's founder Marty Roesch. It's good to see that this basic Internet marketing strategy can produce solid companies with bright futures. Keeping the Content Distribution Market Edgy: Netli announced the availability of NetliOffload -- their Akamai content-caching knockoff. Akamai took Speedera out of the market in part to diminish the price competition for services and apparently the market has taken notice and increasingly encouraged Netli to get in there and fill the void. Given that most of the commercial content distribution companies don't really look like the dot.com behemoths for which Akamai was originally designed, Netli thinks they can provide a good alternative without having to match Akamai's (or even Speedera's) capital investment and network build out. Isn't free market competition fun to watch! Cisco Development Reorganizes: The rumors we had been hearing for some time turned out to the true. Mario Mazzola, Chief Development Officer, retired and Cisco development necessarily reorganized. What was perhaps surprising was the departure of Luca Cafiero, one of Mario's close associates and mentioned by many as a contender to succeed him. Instead Charlie Giancarlo got the job. Sometimes reorganizations don't have much impact. Sometimes they determine the future of the company. Long ago, HP delayed its ultimate entry into the computer business for years because the microwave mafia kept winning the senior management battles. Cisco is at a critical junction point as they have to decide the best way to implement the intelligent network and grab more of the IT spend. Time will tell. War of the Worlds (Geek Edition): AMD filed anti-trust charges against Intel. The proceedings have already given an interesting view into the competitive world of microprocessors and there must be much more to come. The painful part is going to be having to watch lawyers grapple with technology issues (never a pretty picture) and it will be especially painful to listen to the press comment on anti-trust. Being big, efficient and aggressive isn't illegal and Intel is all of these. More confusing still, anti-trust depends on the consumer's best interests being impaired. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the microprocessor Peter had some one-on-one time with Gordon Moore and asked him if he thought that Intel could maintain the amazing Pentium franchise over time. Gordon answered "Probably not, but you would have to be an idiot not to try" and Intel isn't an idiot. Intel doesn't have to break the law to break a competitor. When you consider manufacturing and market strength Intel's advantage over AMD is comparable to that of the US Army over the Iraq army. I'll be watching closely and trying not to get too disgusted by ignorant commentary. Crime Without Penalty -- The more you look at phishing scams, the more you realize how fragile e-Commerce can be. Last month David Jevans spoke at the Inbox Conference and pointed out that most phishing attacks are conducted by perpetrators outside of the US, many time zones away while the attacker's own service providers might be on night shift and from countries that have no interest in pursing the culprits even when presented with evidence of their activities. In other words, your bank account gets compromised and no one gets caught. Storage is Cheap: If you missed Peter Christy's discussion on the XOSoft Webinar "Storage is cheap, bandwidth is not: Some ways to leverage inexpensive storage" here's the link for a replay: Storage is Cheap Funding News -- In June, nearly $300M was invested in 29 infrastructure startups.
