News Summary New Reports -- We've selected two new report topics to focus on during the summer. The first report will be an updated look at what's been going on in the Wide Area Networking market. The past twelve months have seen a lot of changes -- mergers and acquisitions, new product introductions, the rollout of VoIP and the widespread use of DSL have done a lot to change the WAN landscape and the branch office networking market. We think it's the perfect time to take a fresh look at what branch office customers are thinking. The second report will focus on our expectations regarding the impact that Exchange 2007 will have on the messaging market (see below). As always, we welcome your input regarding these subjects -- jkatsaros@irg-intl.com. EMC Gobbles Up nLayers: We had a briefing all set with nLayers about their latest functional release when it got pre-empted by the news that EMC had acquired them. Others in the press have reported a $50M transaction which if true is a nice return on the less than $10M in, and a quite palatable price for a big company. We'll have to wait for the honeymoon period to end but for now they paint an expansive picture of this being the beginning of a serious EMC applications management thrust (EMC certainly has strong standing as a data center vendor and a proven provider of data management). All of this is particularly interesting because the nLayers offering is packaged as take-it-out-and-run-it appliance and does a lot of useful work without requiring credentialed access to the target systems. Becoming part of EMC will either be a great boost for them or kill them we guess. If it's the latter we hope it's quick. Low Millions -- A McAfee spokesperson stated that its acquisition of Preventsys on Tuesday was in the "low millions." This couldn't have been good news for its investors who put in $19.2M or for that matter for its employees. What's worse is that other companies wandering around in the risk management/compliance/policy management space can't be all that happy either with this outcome. A small valuation coupled with McAfee getting its hands on this technology isn't the sort of thing that makes a policy oriented startup do cartwheels. Perhaps it would have been better for everyone if McAfee just offered up a "no comment" on the deal size. Rolling Thunder -- Earlier last week Microsoft unveiled a bit more of its Exchange 2007 plans with what it refers to as Built-In Protection which includes mail hygiene (virus and spam), in transit security and regulatory compliance functionality. Rather than unveiling all that's happening with Exchange 2007 in one swoop, Microsoft makes it more interesting by pushing out pieces of information a little at a time. (This week the Exchange group is announcing new mobility features in 2007.) It's clear from what they showed that they're clearly planning on moving onto the Windows Server platform much of what's done today externally by e-mail appliances. Since the bulk of the e-mail community is on Exchange, these changes may disrupt market share in e-mail security from what it is today. Exchange 2007 is a pretty big transition that holds the potential for shaking up this infrastructure market sector. We've decided to treat it as a subject in an upcoming research report. If you've got thoughts on it one way or the other, send us a note jkatsaros@irg-intl.com. Blue Security Tosses in the Towel: In a conclusion that you would only expect in a daytime soap, Blue Security threw in the towel and gave up on their anti-spam plans. The details of what happened exceed the space here (or the interest of an average reader) but there is a lot to chew on and try and understand. If you don't understand how frail our Internet is or the potentially lethal power in today's BotNets, this should be a call to action. What's hardest to understand is how security "experts" (the Blue Security team was experienced) could have created an infrastructure so vulnerable. We may never know that, but if they failed to plan adequately for the future, what's the hope for people who know even less?
Inbox (the meeting) Happenings -- Maybe we're just desperate for a little entertainment, but Inbox seems to have life left in it. We helped with some fun panels. Our notions of the importance of reputation continue to thrive (although we guess we have to accept poor marks for communication because the core ideas are still mysterious to many). The most interesting panel was the 2006 version of the New Threats discussion. Although in some ways it seems like we're making progress, when you hear of what's happening it's sort of like taking a throat swab and discovering that you have drug-resistant staph living there. Mark Sunner from Message Labs estimated that 60% of the PC's resident on broadband consumer networks have been infected with some virus and are potentially BotNet slaves. You don't want to do the math and estimate the potential DDoS attacks possible if you command only a small percentage of them. The panelists also generally agreed that at times during the last year over 90% of the network mail traffic was intended to infect systems (90% of ALL the traffic). Perhaps it is finally time to get out the Duct Tape and cover over the network access ports. We tried to get them to comment on the potential impact of XP SP2 and Vista but none would take the bait. Vista Lives! I've been sort of running Vista since the CTP Beta came out in February with the intention being to see what the new security is like. Up through last week it was a painful reminder of what it's like to try to use unfinished software, and what the semantic difference is between "should be able to run Vista" and "runs Vista." The new Beta that came out last week is a big step up. Those that think Vista means Vaporware are losing their argument. For us the most fascinating question is if you accept at face value that the intrinsic security is much better than pre XP SP2 systems, how many enterprises will do the math and install more quickly than in the past? Is Better Best? Many of you are familiar with our Peet's Coffee watch, our simple little way to figure out how well Silicon Valley is doing based on the car types, line length and the power meetings that are happening at the Peet's Coffee across the street from our offices, we thought we'd bring you up to date on the new coffee place that's opened up in downtown Los Altos -- Mr. English. Since it's just a few doors down from Peet's and just around the corner from Starbucks, you might wonder why they chose this particular location. (They told us that they like the town a lot.) In any event, we tried their coffee and it's delightful as are the owners. Time will tell whether having the better product can win out over an established brands and their strategic locations. Next time you come over here we'll buy you a cup. Funding News -- Eighteen infrastructure companies received $152M in venture investment over the past couple of weeks. It sure seems like the week by week numbers for infrastructure investments have dropped off in the past few months. It wasn't that long ago that $152M would have been an average week.
