What's in a Name? or The Medium is the Message! As many of you noticed, we changed our "look and feel" two issues ago.  For those of you who missed it, here's our story.  Five years ago our Internet Acceleration newsletter started with a distribution list of 200 of our unsuspecting friends.  It evolved over the years and today we're pleased to say that our subscription list is just about 7,000 names and we think that there are actually a few people that actually read some of it. Proving one more time that you can teach old dogs new tricks, and finally succumbing to the relentless whining from our true digirati friends, we're going 21st century with a new format, new name (Infrastructure 2.1) and a blog repository www.infrastructure2-1.com. The price remains the same. Fetch Spot! (tell us what you think).

Christmas Gifts -- It's that time of year when company PR departments want to send out gifts like bottles of wine and Harry and David's Christmas Tower of Treat (see Web site for details) to their favorite analysts.  Many analyst firms have strict restrictions that prohibit analysts from accepting these sorts of treats as this may be considered a type of bride.  We want to remind you that we don't have any such restrictions, so if you're having trouble distributing your excess analyst graft you can find detailed shipping instructions on our website. But act quickly so that it can still get here by the holidays.

Dinner Anyone? -- Well, it's getting close to that time of the year when we invite all of our readers to join us for our N-Square (Networking Networking) dinner.  This will be our fourth or fifth annual dinner and all readers are invited (we generally run out of room and can't accept RSVPs at about 75 people).  The dinner will be in the Palo Alto area on Tuesday evening, March 6th.  The topic will be Virtualization -- Peter will be leading a discussion with a couple of vendors squarely in the virtualization space.  We're told that these are fun "schmoozing" evenings thanks mostly to you all for showing up.  RSVP -- jkatsaros@irg-intl.com

Chambers's Victory Lap -- Coming off the heels of its recent $8.2B revenue quarter with its stock price finally moving upward (currently it's above $27/share) for the first time in several years, Cisco's John Chambers kicked off the C-Scape analyst conference with a victory lap.  Who can blame him for feeling so good?  Chambers loves to focus the Cisco teams on market share and the numbers certainly are impressive.  Cisco is number one in each of these sectors -- Switching -- 73%, Routing 70%, Wireless 65%, Networked Home 51%, Enterprise Voice 23% and Security 38%.  The way that Cisco constantly enters and often dominates new markets is a phenomenal story of modern company management.  Cisco is the new GE.  When the bubble burst in 2000 and Cisco had its inventory fiasco, lots of people wondered if they'd ever return to as strong of a position as they had.  It looks like that question has been answered.  Since their analyst conference C-Scape was last week, we've decided to make it the topic of this week's newsletter.  The picture shows Jim Grubb, Cisco's Chief Demo Officer, on stage with Chambers during the kickoff keynote.  Chambers and Grubb have this Penn and Teller type routine that they perform at each of Chamber's keynotes that's quite entertaining.  If you need a closing act at your company Christmas party you might try booking them.  ^ Back to top

Who Took the Money?  One of the (many) amazing things about John Chambers is that he's so nice and so demanding at the same time. Nothing is good enough at Cisco if it could be better, and that includes the Analyst Conference. In search of a better format, Cisco chose to hold a separate Financial Analysts Conference and diminish the financial content of the big Analyst Conference and aim it more at the Industry Analyst.  For the Financial Analysts this makes sense because the meeting was held in NYC where most of them are anywhere, and I believe that many of that crowd aren't really interested in the technology.  In my (not so humble) opinion the impact on C-Scape (the Analyst Meeting) was pretty negative. Cisco is a very quantitative company and in the past there has always been significant discussion of the business analysis and how that informs and drives product and channel strategies.  With the exception of one slide in Chambers' presentation there was essentially no business discussion on the first day (no presentation by the CFO for example).  I'm told that many of the industry analysts also like the change. Personally I have no idea how to dissect interesting technology devoid of the business. Apparently those other analysts do. Another good reason not to ask them for strategic advice if you ask me.   ^ Back to top

SONA Unwound / Cisco's Software Strategy:  At the last moment, Cisco added a software strategy breakout to the Analyst Meeting and Senior VP Cliff Meltzer had a lot to say. Cisco has painted an Intelligent Information Network vision for years, and a year ago introduced SONA (Service-Oriented Network Architecture).  IIN or SONA -- whatever you choose to call it -- talks about a lot of real value that Cisco can inject into networks if they can just understand where to put the software that implements it (running applications on top of IOS router applications isn't a viable idea). Unfortunately they never explained how Cisco might actually implement such a vision in an interesting timeframe (it's only software so given enough time and money anything is "possible"). In the last year, Cliff inherited SONA and AON to add to the large software organization he already had doing network management (all of which is good for Cisco since Cliff really understands software and most of Cisco doesn't). Cliff's insight is that virtualization of Cisco's appliance infrastructure (all those x86 servers embedded in a complex Cisco-powered network) all of a sudden makes that infrastructure a remarkable distributed computer platform on which to build a real service platform, and that's exactly what Cliff plans to do. It's another example of how virtualization enables much larger solutions (rather than being magic technology by itself). We wrote about Virtual Appliances in a recent report, and we'll talk more about Cisco's plans in one that we're just wrapping up as a special Christmas present for our clients -- Cisco's SONA Unwound -- Virtualization Intersects Appliances (again). With virtualization we can now see a path by which Cisco can really add powerful network-based services without redoing all their existing software.  Interested?  jkatsaros@irg-intl.com    ^ Back to top

Cisco Gets Physical:  One of the most interesting breakouts at the Analyst Meeting was the security session that ended up being about physical security.  Can you imagine a VC getting interested in a business plan that was all about putting video security, door locks and card readers onto an IP network? But that's exactly what Cisco was talking about. It's interesting because Cisco has really dived into this space with deep knowledge and because Cisco says the available market is over $6B/year. As the late senator Dirkson used to say "a billion here, a billion there … after a while it starts to add up to real money."  ^ Back to top

The 16 Year Old Myth -- One of the reasons why the Cisco analyst conference is so interesting is that each year the Cisco team does its best to present a clear picture of the big pockets of enterprise and service provider demand which ultimately drives the Cisco engine.  As Cisco grows stronger in each of its markets, painting the demand picture becomes harder of course.  For instance, Cisco's VoIP story of a few years ago held out the traditional PBX world as being a gazillion dollar business. Now, with their market dominance in this space, the growth forecast slows.  With Google's recent buyout of YouTube on everyone's mind, there was a lot of talk about "what 16 year olds will do next" and how what 16 year olds do, will be the next big demand to hit US service providers (and, by inference, the group whose Internet usage will ultimately drive SP infrastructure investment).  Well, maybe that will happen (in which case there will be a lot of frustrated parents having to fork over more money for faster connect times so that their kids can chill out on the net).  Strangely, this is sounding a bit like the bubble service provider economics of the late 90's -- "the Internet is growing faster than Moore's law; build it and they will come." It's not that service providers won't be rethinking their strategies and looking to see where bandwidth hungry apps may be important.  What's worrisome is that we're counting on a bunch of 16 year olds to start "doing things that we don't know about yet."  Yes, YouTube does consume a lot of bandwidth from their Website servers to the Internet (those who know say in the months before Google acquired them -- they were paying a million a month to distribute their content).  But rewiring the last mile wasn't necessary.   ^ Back to top

Citrix Goes Streaming:  Hold the presses! Citrix just announced the acquisition of Ardence, a software company in Waltham Massachusetts.  Ardence "streams" the operating system to a PC which is a fancy way of saying Ardence has designed a flexible means by which PC's can be booted from the LAN. Network boot isn't particularly new. What Ardence does goes much further and allows a single boot "image" to serve a diverse population of machines by the ability to fold in configuration specific drivers.  My bold prediction is that this will confuse the crap out of most of the press and other analysts although it actually makes a lot of sense. The value in this offering is in the leverage it provides for configuration management and the fact that every reboot gets an up-to-date and mal-ware cleansed image -- interestingly this is the problem that start-up mōka5 is solving with quite different technology (virtual images). The offering certainly fits square in the overall Citrix value proposition and should expand the Citrix footprint if Citrix and their customers can differentiate what technology to use when simply.  ^ Back to top

Websense Makes Another Move -- Today Websense announced its plans to acquire information leak prevention vendor Port Authority, a few months after having announced an OEM partnership with the company.  We've previously discussed Websense's desires to increase its portfolio of security product offerings so its move into the content inspection market isn't surprising.  In 2006 we produced several reports covering the content inspection market.  So far, this market has proved to be a disappointment to investors as the products in this space haven't been barnburners as, for instance, were the spam appliances when that market was taking off.  It's been our view that the first generation of content analysis products didn't provide enough value and, to do so, would require much more comprehensive capabilities and integration within the infrastructure.  Plus, the expansion of existing product functionality such as what's happening with Exchange 2007 and its feature packed content inspection capabilities would reshape customer content inspection demands.  So it's not surprising that after many years of being in startup mode and $23M of venture investment, Port Authority's investors would choose the acquisition route - $90M in cash makes a pretty good return on this investment.  We've counted over 30 startups in this arena, most with a combination of interesting technology and disappointing market performance.  It's likely that this acquisition may kick off a series of actions by other big security players to go shopping for content inspection functionality which they can infuse into their product lines and investors, having learned the long term difficulties in this space, will be pleased to get out.  ^ Back to top

Appliances Gone Virtual:  We've been tracking virtualization for almost all of the modern period (it's important to remember that it was first used commercially 40 years ago!) and it finally jumped directly in our bailiwick with the big bang emergence of virtual appliances as a key topic at the VMWorld meeting. We've finished a pretty comprehensive overview and analysis report for our clients (sorry you hangers on…) -- Virtualization Intersects Appliances (and more).  In brief, virtualizing appliances are a natural evolution in terms of providing system functionality with minimal hassle. For an existing VMWare ESX customer virtual appliances make sense (for example Zeus' load balancing virtual appliances) but VMWare's price structure is really only suitable for expensive physical infrastructures and wouldn't work as it stands for moving an image onto the kind of inexpensive server typically used for appliances.
