Symantec Moves Up -- What do you do if you're John Thompson and you succeeded over 5 years in turning Symantec into a highly profitable security software company with strong growth? The answer is apparently not to rest on your laurels. Last week Symantec rolled out its new corporate positioning based on "Information Integrity." Their goal is to move up the stack and capture a lot more of the security value proposition beyond the anti-virus software that fuels the majority of Symantec revenues today. Not surprisingly the announcement was thin on concrete details about the future, but Symantec clearly has enough bright people and unencumbered cash flow to make this very interesting to watch in coming quarters. As they say in TV -- "Film at 11." We definitely like the idea of moving the target from "network security" to "information security." That makes sense because it basically points out how customers can look at their security investment as providing increased value since it ultimately is protecting information. It's the integrity part that we're looking to understand what Symantec has in store.

Peter Does ISPCon This Week: Having survived the threat of a tar-and-feathering at the VMWare User Conference last week, Peter shows his head again this week at ISPCon in Santa Clara. On Wednesday at 11:30 he'll speak on P2P and zombie control within ISP subscriber networks and then at 4:15 on Thursday moderate (or provide provocation as the case might be) a panel on Web mail.

Our New Security Research Advisory Service -- Forgive our little commercial message insert here, but we've had a lot of really positive feedback about our focus on the security sector of infrastructure. We think we've found a hotbed of disruption in the area of security (where we've been rummaging about for the last six months) and it will be the basis of our newest advisory service including a security focused series of reports. The first report The Evolving Landscape of Network Security will paint the overview and then we will publish follow on reports that focus on some of the most interesting specific markets. Contact john@netsedgeonline.com.

A Virtual Celebration -- Having recently published a techo-snotty note here declaring that virtualization was the next great VC sucker play, it was with some understandable trepidation that we visited the first VMWare User Group conference in San Diego last week. The worry increased when it became clear that about 2,000 enthusiasts had shown up. Why all the enthusiasm? VMWare has elegant infrastructure technology at just the right time. If you need to consolidate servers, they have one of the best solutions. And partners like IBM are enthusiastic because they end up selling high-end MP servers to the customer to function as the consolidation basis. VMWare also provides elegant technology for business resilience since they make it possible to run apps on backup servers that aren't exactly what the production server was. All of this has led to a rapidly growing $60M/quarter run rate and lots of enthusiasm. At the meeting, VMWare announced an interesting new desktop offering -- ACE -- that provides a clever way of running sensitive business applications (for example) on an employee's uncertain home machine. They also announced a bunch of software aimed at scaling "out" to a LAN integrated set of computers rather than scaling "up" to a high end server. Somehow we weren't tarred feathered and run out of town on a rail. The day ended with lengthy conversations with most of the senior management team. So after that, do we withdraw our earlier comment? Nope! But that's a longer discussion.

And the Market Leader Is ... Last week IronPort led the news with their announcement of its new $45M venture funding bringing their total raised to a category leading $90M. Included with this announcement were some references to their sales volume, something that startups too often keep us in the dark on. IronPort claimed $16.5M in gross bookings which, while not exactly a statement of their quarterly revenues, gives us some idea of how they're doing. As importantly, IronPort claims to be the market share leader in their category for both revenue and units shipped. If that's true, and we assume it is, then there's a remarkable story underneath this -- a year ago that wasn't the case. So IronPort hasn't just had a good year, they've gained substantial ground on their competitors (pretty substantial in fact). If you do the math, this means that the market for anti-spam/virus e-mail appliance products is somewhere in the $150M to $200M range for 2004. Couple that with the $100M in revenues from the Managed Services anti-e-mail abuse market and a similar amount on the software side (although we might be doing some double counting here) it looks like the e-mail anti-abuse market is knocking on the half billion dollar range for 2004. That's a pretty good reason for all this fuss. What's not clear is how investors will get to make any money on these investments. Brightmail and Corvigo got out early and paid back handsomely. But with IronPort raising the investment ante to $90M, it will take a much larger run rate (and probably a much broader product offering) on the parts of the anti-abuse appliance makers before they'll get to some sort of exit velocity. But in the meantime, it's sure fun watching all of this happening and, thanks in large part to all this venture money, the analyst dinners that these companies will be holding are sure to be at the finest restaurants. So keep inviting us!!!

Our Gartner Comments -- Each time we shine the light on a Gartner flub we get lots of feedback from readers telling us their own versions of being "Gartnerized." It's probably worth us saying this -- we'd really like the folks at Gartner to be successful and accurate. Here's the thing. If Gartner, as the industry leader, improves and actually does a better job of advising IT customers on what their choices are and how best to improve their businesses by deploying information technology then presumably enterprises and government agencies will increase their strategic use of IT and we all win because this stuff that we all work so hard at ultimately becomes more valuable (people buy more and they're willing to pay for more features and functionality). So instead of saying things like "IDS is dead" which is really just a journalistic way to attract attention and is a "research finding" that doesn't seem to be supported with very much actual research, we'd prefer seeing Gartner do a lot more on the thought leadership front so that IT shops end up doing a better job of solving security problems instead of reacting to events. Here's what we recommend to those chaps from Connecticut: 1) Do what big research companies used to do in the "old days" when senior industry executives actually went to work at big research companies (probably because they were paying better back then) after having established themselves in senior positions in IT shops; 2) Conduct (and publish) more primary research (real disciplined research, not journalistic interviews); and 3) If you're going to do those magic quadrants, put many many more research hours into them and provide transparency so that we can all understand the scoring elements involved with placing the winners and losers -- writing a five page summary report covering twenty companies in a category and putting up a quadrant without the supporting scoring matrix doesn't do justice to the category players nor the potential users. We're all better off if Gartner (and its peers) were to turn a new leaf.

It's the Weather, Stupid -- While most pundits on election eve are telling you that it's a toss up, we're of course breaking from the pack with our pick on who is going to win tomorrow. As we've mentioned in the past, the polling data that you're seeing is fundamentally flawed due to the fact that pollsters were caught off guard by the number of new registrants (and the lack of ability to first poll these newcomers and then to accurately determine the likelihood that they'll actually vote), the high hang up rates from urban respondents and their lack of ability to track voters who primarily use cell phones. We think the biggest determining factor will be the weather in the showdown states. If the weather is good, look for the Democrats to fare better and if the weather is bad enough to deter voters from fighting snarled traffic and waiting in long lines then the Republicans will win the edge.

Funding News -- $100M of new money went into seven infrastructure companies in mid-October.
